Soul Searching by Lyla Sage
Soul Searching by Lyla Sage is a paranormal romance set in the small town of Sweetwater Peak. It follows our two main characters Collins Cartwright who is a photographer that can communicate with ghosts and Brady Cooper the brooding upholsterer who recently moved into town for a quieter life. But when the ghosts have gone silent on Collins and her photography job is no longer inspiring her she returns to her home town. Staying in the apartment above the upholstery shop Collins and Brady navigate having another person around and fall for each other unexpectedly.
“I’ll go anywhere with you, Collins. To the ends of the earth and back again if you asked me to.”
This was such a fun, spooky fall romance that gave me all the cozy vibes. I had recently finished reading Lyla Sage's Rebel Blue Ranch series and was so excited when I saw this was her next book. The subtle nods in Soul Searching to that series warmed my heart. Collins was a strong character that I really liked and her growth throughout kept me invested in how her story played out. The struggling family dynamics between Collins and her sister Clarke was very emotional and the subplot of the family antique store potentially being sold allowed for me to root for the characters to win. Brady was definitely a hot love interest but he also had some underlying issues that Collins was able to open up and Brady did the same for Collins. I enjoyed them exploring the town of Sweetwater Peak and all it has to offer from Collins point of view. It made me feel more connected to the town and excited for more to come in this series. The ghosts wreaking havoc in the upholstery shop was one of the funniest parts and allowed reprieve from more serious matters. Now, there were some things I didn't fully enjoy. I was able to guess pretty easily who was trying to buy the antique shop which made the ending feel a bit lackluster to me. I also couldn't stand how both Collins and Brady were ignoring the tension between them through the first half of this book, constantly convincing themselves the other isn't attractive. This made me feel confused because it felt like a one point a switch had just been turned on and they suddenly liked each other and decided to be flirty. All in all it was an overall fast paced, good read and I will be sure to pick up the next one!
